Feeling overwhelmed, like we have so much to get done and we don’t know what to do next, seems to demobilize us.
When we are in overwhelm it feels like everything is piling up and the world is on our shoulders. At times, we feel so overwhelmed that we can’t move forward, and yet we know have a list a mile long of things we must get done.
A lot of folks out there will tell you when you are feeling overwhelmed to prioritize. Well, priorities are great, but about a year ago when I was feeling stuck and overwhelmed, I needed something more.
What Can I Do Today?
That’s when I found myself asking, “what can I do today?,” in this moment, to move forward.
I ignored the list of priorities and to-do’s that I had previously created, and simply focused on what can I do right now that will help me feel better.
At that specific time I was going through some major house repairs. The activity that comes with construction, kept me from effectively doing what was on my “to-do” list. So I settled in and began going through a ton of emails I had. When I finished clearing out literally thousands of email, that felt great! It was a lighter feeling that allowed me to step out of overwhelm and back into a calm space to move forward.
So I suggest asking yourself this simple question, “what can I do right now, today?” that will feel better and help me to move forward in even a small way. The whole point of life is to move forward and feel good while doing it. I hope this helps you as much as it has helped me.
Let me know if you’ve tried this technique when feeling overwhelmed or another one that worked for you.
