Are You Living a Borrowed Life? When the Life You Built No Longer Feels Like Yours

What if the life you built is exactly the life you were supposed to have, but somewhere along the way, you went missing from it?

Maybe you have the career you worked hard for, the home you wanted, relationships, responsibilities, accomplishments, and a calendar filled with things that matter. From the outside, your life may look successful. You may even know you have plenty to be grateful for. Yet underneath all of it, there can be a quiet feeling you can’t quite explain: Why doesn’t this life feel like mine?

That feeling doesn’t usually appear overnight. The disconnection happens slowly, one reasonable decision at a time. You make the responsible choice. The safe choice. The decision that makes sense on paper. You do what your family expects, what society rewards, or what the people around you believe is best. Eventually, those individual choices become a life.

This is especially easy for high-achieving women because we know how to make things work. We adapt. We solve problems. We keep moving. We can become so good at executing the life in front of us that we forget to stop and ask one very important question: Is this actually what I want?

When “Should” Becomes Your Life

There is an important difference between competence and choice.

You can execute a life beautifully without consciously choosing it. You can succeed at something you never truly wanted. You can stay committed to something because you believe you should. You can even love parts of your life deeply while recognizing that some of the decisions that created it came from obligation, fear, expectations, or a desire to belong.

That doesn’t make you ungrateful. It makes you aware.

For much of my own life, I made decisions based on what I believed I was supposed to do. There was a picture of what life was supposed to look like: college, marriage, family, stability and all the things that represented a successful life. Yet there were parts of that picture I knew deep inside weren’t truly mine.

Eventually, I had to become much more conscious about the decisions I was making. I had to begin separating what I actually wanted from what society, family, and other people had taught me I should want.

That distinction changed everything.

The Fear Beneath the “Should”

Sometimes we don’t choose the expected life simply because we’re trying to please people. There can be something much deeper underneath it: the fear of what will happen if we become fully ourselves.

What will people think?

Will they understand me?

Will they judge me?

Will I still belong?

Will they think I’ve lost my mind?

Those fears can keep us small without us realizing they’re running the show. We learn to edit ourselves, soften what we know, hide parts of ourselves, or choose the path that creates the least resistance.

But eventually, there comes a point when continuing to abandon yourself becomes more uncomfortable than allowing yourself to be seen.

That is the crossroads.

Try the “Should Audit”

If part of your life feels borrowed, you don’t have to tear everything apart. You don’t have to quit your job, leave a relationship, sell your house, or make a dramatic decision today.

Start with honesty.

Take out a piece of paper and write down five decisions currently shaping your life. They might involve your work, home, relationships, commitments, finances, or how you’re spending your time.

Next to each one, write one word: WANT or SHOULD.

Don’t be diplomatic. Don’t write the answer you think you’re supposed to give. Write the truth.

Then look at everything you’ve marked “should” and ask yourself:

Is this still the trade I want to make?

You may decide that it is. A “should” isn’t automatically wrong. The point isn’t judgment. The point is becoming conscious of what you’re choosing and why.

Because the moment you can see the difference between what you want and what you’ve been conditioned to want, you have a choice again.

You don’t have to know exactly what comes next.

You simply have to become willing to ask yourself a question you may not have asked in a very long time:

What do I want?

Your answer might surprise you.

And it might be the beginning of finally creating a life that doesn’t just look right from the outside.

It feels like yours.
