How many times has someone told you to “stop overthinking”?
As if you haven’t tried.
You’ve talked yourself through the situation. You’ve reminded yourself that everything is fine. You’ve tried thinking positively, distracting yourself, making a plan, and convincing yourself that there is nothing to worry about. Maybe it works for a little while. Then the thoughts start spinning again.
What if the problem isn’t that you’re thinking too much?
What if the thoughts are actually the last part of the anxiety loop, not the beginning?
That changes everything.
Your body can register a threat cue, whether it is happening right now or connected to something it remembers, before your conscious mind has words for what is happening. Your body sounds the alarm, and then your mind goes searching for an explanation.
Suddenly, you’re worried about the email you sent earlier. You’re replaying a conversation. You’re imagining everything that could go wrong tomorrow. Your mind has found something to attach to the feeling already happening inside you.
The thought may not be creating the anxiety. Your mind may be trying to explain why your body already feels unsafe.
When Your Body Is Still Looking for Danger
For some women, this pattern started long before they ever called it anxiety.
Maybe you learned to read the room when you were young. You noticed someone’s tone of voice, facial expression, or mood. You learned that things could change quickly, so being aware of everything happening around you became a way to protect yourself.
Eventually, that constant awareness becomes automatic.
The problem is that your nervous system doesn’t necessarily stop scanning simply because your circumstances change. Your life can become safer while your body continues looking for the danger it learned to expect.
That is why reassurance can feel wonderful for five minutes and then disappear. You may already have all the information you need. What your body may be missing is evidence of safety it can actually feel.
I’ve seen this in my own life.
There were times when unexpected problems sent me straight into overwhelm. During one particularly difficult period, I had so little capacity that the only thing I could figure out how to do was clean out my email inbox. Years later, when another major problem happened, I noticed something had changed. The circumstances were still stressful, but I was responding differently.
The deeper lesson came when I stopped arguing with what I was feeling.
Instead of demanding that I function normally, I began listening. I rested when my body needed rest. I allowed emotions to surface without immediately judging them or trying to make them disappear.
And I began to understand something I wish more women knew:
The body has its own language.
You can’t always think your way out of something your body is still trying to process.
Give Your Body Evidence, Not an Argument
If the anxiety loop begins in the body, sometimes the interruption needs to begin there too.
It can be incredibly simple.
Place your hand over your heart and feel the physical contact. Take a slow breath in for four counts. Hold for one. Then exhale for six. As you breathe, remind yourself:
My body is safe right now, in this moment.
Not forever.
Not a promise that nothing difficult will ever happen again.
Just right now.
That longer exhale, the contact of your hand against your chest, and your awareness of the present moment give your body something different from another mental argument. They give it an experience of safety.
This isn’t about forcing anxiety away. It’s about creating enough space to hear what your body has been trying to tell you.
Healing has happened in my life one baby step at a time. Sometimes the greatest progress wasn’t pushing myself harder. It was recognizing that I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life anxious, looking over my shoulder, or waiting for something to go wrong.
I wanted to put my shoulders down.
I wanted to breathe.
Most of all, I wanted to feel safe.
And today, I do.
If your anxious mind has been running the show for a long time, you don’t have to figure this out alone. Inside I AM the Light Sanctuary, we work with these patterns together, helping you reconnect with yourself and create more of the safety, peace, and freedom you’ve been searching for.
Because sometimes you don’t need another argument for why you should be okay.
Your body needs an opportunity to finally feel it.
