Have you ever noticed that the moment life finally calms down, you become anxious?
The work is finished. The house is quiet. Nothing is demanding your attention. Yet instead of feeling relief, your mind starts racing. You pick up your phone, begin another project, clean something that doesn’t need cleaning, or worry about tomorrow.
If you’ve ever experienced that, I want you to hear this:
You’re not bad at relaxing.
You learned survival.
For many high-achieving women, staying busy has become more than a habit. It’s become a way of feeling safe. Over time, your nervous system learned that being alert, prepared, and constantly doing was the best way to protect you. Eventually, your body forgot what it feels like to truly rest.
I remember reaching the end of a particularly difficult season in my own life. I expected to feel relief. Instead, I felt anxious. I kept waiting for the next problem to appear. I didn’t realize my nervous system had become so accustomed to bracing for what might happen next that peace actually felt unfamiliar.
That’s what survival does.
Your nervous system has one primary job: to keep you alive. If your life has been filled with stress, loss, caregiving, uncertainty, or years of holding everything together, your body adapts. It begins to believe that staying busy is safe, while slowing down feels risky.
So instead of asking yourself, “Why can’t I relax?” try asking a different question:
What has my body been trying to protect me from?
That simple shift replaces self-criticism with compassion.
Recently, I experienced another layer of this lesson myself. After months of emotional strain and the grief of losing my father, my body simply stopped. My energy disappeared. My capacity was gone. For the first time, I couldn’t push through.
Instead of forcing myself to perform, I chose to listen.
What surfaced surprised me. A younger part of me, one I thought I had already healed, began expressing fear, frustration, and exhaustion. Rather than trying to fix it, I simply allowed it to be present. I observed it with curiosity instead of judgment.
Little by little, something remarkable happened.
My nervous system began to settle.
For the first time, I experienced a deep sense of peace that didn’t come from accomplishing anything. It came from finally feeling safe.
One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is this:
Safety comes before healing.
Safety comes before peace.
Safety comes before trust.
When your body begins to believe it is safe, everything starts to change.
That’s why I teach what I call the Safety Reset.
Pause.
Look around the room.
Notice something beautiful.
Notice something familiar.
Take a slow breath.
Place your hand over your heart and quietly say:
“I am here.”
“I am safe in this moment.”
“Nothing is required of me right now.”
It may seem incredibly simple, but healing rarely happens through dramatic breakthroughs. More often, it happens one safe breath at a time.
If you’re the strong one everyone depends on, I know how lonely that can feel. I also know you don’t have to carry it alone anymore.
You are not broken.
You are not failing.
You learned survival.
And what was learned can be gently unlearned.
Every moment you choose to slow down, breathe, and create safety within yourself, you’re teaching your nervous system a new way to live. That’s where healing begins.
