Healing Identity Wounds: Remembering Who You Truly Are

We are not broken.
We have simply forgotten who we truly are.

In my own journey of healing spiritual amnesia and emotional trauma, I discovered this truth: beneath all the pain, shame, and masks lies a radiant, whole self — and it is waiting for you to remember.

The Heavy Coats We Carry

Imagine you were born wearing a beautiful golden cloak — a symbol of your divine light, love, and worth. Over time, others draped heavy coats over you: abuse, neglect, betrayal, shame, abandonment. Those coats became your identity. You forgot the golden cloak was ever there.

That’s how wounds of identity form. You start to believe the lies:
I’m unworthy. I’m unlovable. I’m broken.

That was my story too. As a child, I was beaten and silenced. My family taught me I didn’t matter. By the time I was 16, I no longer wanted to live. I believed I was invisible, unworthy of love, and incapable of belonging.

And yet, a small spark within me whispered: There is more to you than this.

That whisper became my guiding light.

The Hidden Cost of Forgetting

When we forget who we are, we develop patterns to survive:
– Overachieving but feeling empty.
– Sabotaging relationships because we don’t believe we deserve love.
– Living numb or disconnected to avoid feeling pain.
– Wearing a mask of perfection to hide the truth inside.

For decades, I overachieved, moving from one accomplishment to the next, never celebrating, because nothing ever felt enough. I felt like I had to be all things to all people — but inside I was crumbling.

Healing came the moment I stopped denying my wounds and started feeling them. It wasn’t easy. It was messy. I cried, grieved, raged. But each time I let myself feel, the weight grew lighter.

You can’t heal what you refuse to feel.

Coming Home to Yourself

Healing identity wounds isn’t about becoming someone new. It’s about removing the heavy coats and remembering your golden cloak.

Here are steps that helped me — and that can help you too:

🌱 Become aware of the wound.
Name it. Write about it. What happened? What did you come to believe about yourself? How is it still showing up in your life?

🌱 Feel it to heal it.
Give yourself permission to grieve. Let your inner child — that small, hurt version of you — speak. Hold her hand. Tell her: You didn’t deserve this. You are still worthy.

🌱 Show yourself compassion.
Stop shaming yourself for being hurt. You were doing your best to survive. Talk to yourself as you would to a beloved child.

🌱 Reconnect with your soul.
Meditation and prayer helped me remember my true self. Quiet the noise of the world and listen to the still, small voice within.

🌱 Forgive.
Not to excuse what happened, but to release its hold over you. Forgiveness is a process, not a one-time act.

🌱 Affirm your truth.
Speak affirmations that rewire your mind:
I am whole. I am enough. I am loved. I am worthy.

🌱 Surround yourself with people who see you.
Let go of those who diminish your light. Seek out those who honor and respect you as you truly are.

🌱 Take courageous steps as your authentic self.
Set boundaries. Speak your needs. Let the real you be seen.

You Are Whole

Healing is not about perfection. Life is still messy and chaotic. But as you shed the heavy coats, you will feel lighter. You will see yourself — really see yourself — and remember the truth:

I am whole. I am love. I remember who I am.
