Have you ever finally had a quiet moment to yourself and, instead of feeling peaceful, you felt anxious?
You sit down. The house is quiet. Nothing urgent needs your attention. And yet your mind starts racing. You start cleaning, scrolling, planning tomorrow, or finding something – anything – to do.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
Many high-achieving women secretly struggle with rest. They long for peace, crave a slower pace, and dream about finally having time for themselves. But when that time arrives, something inside them becomes uncomfortable.
For years, I thought there was something wrong with me. I believed I needed to push harder, become more disciplined, and somehow learn how to relax. What I eventually discovered changed everything.
Rest wasn’t the problem.
Safety was.
Many of us have spent so much of our lives in survival mode that slowing down feels unfamiliar. And what feels unfamiliar often feels unsafe. We learned to stay busy, stay productive, stay responsible, and carry everyone and everything around us. Being needed became part of our identity. Being strong became who we were.
So when we stop doing, we sometimes don’t know who we are anymore.
I remember recently realizing just how exhausted I had become. I was trying to build my business, move in a new direction, and keep up with everything on my plate. I reached a point where I couldn’t take one more thing on.
I knew I had to stop.
And this time, I really stopped.
I slowed down. I spent more time alone. I gave myself permission to sit with whatever was coming up instead of trying to push through it. At first, it was incredibly uncomfortable. Old thoughts surfaced. Old feelings surfaced. Parts of me that had been ignored for years suddenly wanted my attention.
Instead of fixing them, I simply noticed them.
I listened.
And something surprising happened.
On the other side of that discomfort was peace.
Not perfect peace. Not a magical transformation. But a quiet sense of calm that I hadn’t felt in a very long time.
I realized my body wasn’t fighting rest.
My body was learning safety.
That’s an important distinction because a nervous system that has lived in survival mode often interprets rest as danger. When you’ve spent years bracing for the next problem, slowing down can feel vulnerable. Rest removes the distractions, and suddenly you’re face-to-face with your thoughts, your feelings, your grief, your fears, and all the things you’ve been too busy to notice.
No wonder rest can feel uncomfortable.
But healing happens when we teach ourselves something new.
One breath at a time.
One pause at a time.
One moment at a time.
Here’s a simple practice you can try today.
Place both feet on the floor and take a slow breath. Look around the room and notice three things you can see. Then place your hand over your heart and ask yourself, “What do I need right now?”
Not tomorrow.
Not next week.
Right now.
Then simply listen.
No fixing.
No judging.
Just listening.
This simple practice teaches your nervous system that stillness doesn’t equal danger. It teaches your body that rest is safe. And perhaps most importantly, it reminds you that your worth has never been tied to how much you do.
You don’t have to earn rest.
You don’t have to deserve peace.
You don’t have to prove your value through exhaustion.
If rest feels uncomfortable, there is nothing wrong with you.
Your body simply learned survival.
And now it’s learning something new.
Safety.
